Lake Trout & Pike

Lake Trout

The premier game fish of the north! Lake Trout are the heavy weight giants of freshwater fishing. With their incredible stamina and ability to seriously throw their weight around, Lake trout are freshwater game fish second to none. Often referred to as “Lakers” they are the apex predators that can reach weights in excess of 50 pounds! Many trophy Lakers are caught and released at Inconnu Lodge every summer. We see fish over 20 pounds weekly , fish over 30 pounds every year and a handful of fish that exceed 40 pounds, our lodge record for lake trout is a whopping 62 pounds. The most productive method of fishing is trolling and jigging. Lakers are dependent on deep, cold water, providing shallow water presentations only in the spring and fall. They reside in deeper water that can consistently provide cold temperatures where medium-heavy tackle is necessary. The primary food source for Yukon Lake trout are Lake Whitefish, often reaching over 4 pounds, they make for excellent feed. Many Lakers are caught at Inconnu with half digested Whitefish in their mouths, they are aggressive eaters to say the least.

Northern Pike

Probably the angriest fish in Canada. Northern Pike are known unanimously amongst sport fisherman to be the most aggressive fish in all of North America. Pike in the Yukon Territory are no exception to this. They are fish that are known to eat anything that crosses them, small bait fish, large bait fish, other Pike, ducklings, your favorite spoon, jig or fly. There are Pike out there that would be delighted to feed aggressively at your lure presentation in a chaotic explosion of shallow water excitement. Pike are probably best described as fish with serious attitude. Inconnu Lodge offers access to multiple fly in lakes that harbor these ferocious predators. Some lakes offering classic shallow water spring fishing, others with deep weed beds and some with giant rock piles. Many of our Pike lakes in the Yukon are exclusive to Pike and their main forage that being Lake Whitefish. The peak fishing season for Northern Pike is early summer. The fish have just concluded spawning in and around shallow bays, rocky points/reefs and are feeding aggressively. It is common in the early summer to only fish top water lures and flies for Pike because of this. As the lakes start to warm up, the Pike will move out into areas with large weed-beds, around deeper rock piles and points. They can still be targeted with both flies and shallow water tackle with predictable ferocity.
